The Garden of Dreams

Kathmandu/ The Garden of Dreams is a historical garden which is situated in the mid of Kathmandu city Thamel; Nepal. It Is very close from former Royal Palace and entrance to the tourist area Thamnel.it consists of 6,895 square meters .The Garden was very famous as the garden of Six Seasons which was constructed by Rana Family member late Field Marshal Kaiser Sumsher Rana (1892-1964) in early 1920.

After the completion of this Garden, it was considered as one of the most complicated prestigious private gardens of that time in Nepal and designed stimulated by the famous Edwardian style. Kishore Narshingh, a legend architect who was the designer of Singha Durbar in 1907, who designed Dream Garden and supervised the construction . Within the Garden walls, Kaiser Sumsher twisted an exquisite ensemble of pavilions, fountains, decorative garden furniture and European inspired features such as verandas, pergolas, balustrades, urns and birdhouses etc.

He erected six impressive pavilions, each dedicated to one of the six seasons of Nepal. These pavilions provided the Garden’s architectural framework and lent a cosmopolitan flavor to the formal arrangement of flowers, shrubs and trees. Long gap of neglect ,resulting in breakup pavilions, overgrown paths and loss of the subtropical flora and many things. with the support of Austrian Government, restorations were undertaken between from 2000 to 2007 with the support of Austrian Development Aid in collaboration with the Nepal Ministry of Education. the renovation programmed has become a model project for the sustainable development of other historic places .

The garden, in its design and literary allusions, is linked to the collections of books about gardening, architecture, and literature, in Kaiser Shumsher’s library. the restoration has been completed and opened for all. Today, only half of the original garden is in existence.
